About: The Living Standards Project was launched in the summer of 2023 with the objective of disseminating poverty lines and poverty estimates for India at the state level. The all-India figures are reported in the Bhalla, Bhasin & Virmani (2022) research paper (BBV), which provides detailed and consistent estimates of poverty and inequality for India post-2011 in the absence of the 2017-18 Consumption Survey.
Under the first phase of the Living Standards Project, we are releasing the state-wise poverty lines and poverty estimates that were aggregated to arrive at poverty estimates in the BBV paper. The data is made available under the Creative Commons License ODC-BY.
We will be updating the website with more data that will be of interest to researchers focused on development economics and measurement of living standards both in India and other emerging markets.Â
Presently, the project is being spearheaded by Dr. Surjit S. Bhalla, Karan Bhasin, Dr. Tirthatanmoy Das, Abhinav Motheram, and Dr. Arvind Virmani.
